College Intern Program
The Tyler Police Department offers internships to those persons currently enrolled in criminal justice courses at a college and who possess an interest in the law enforcement profession. The intern assignments are designed to allow students to experience the daily operations of a law enforcement agency. We have two intern positions to fill; placement of a student is based on the receipt of an application. Every effort will be made to place a student in an intern position; however, placement is not guaranteed. Past interns have been assigned to a variety of units.
The majority of students interested in interning at the Tyler Police Department are pursuing careers in criminal justice and/or law enforcement. Most students who are offered internships work a minimum of 10 to 20 hours per week throughout the semester. Internships are considered voluntary, unpaid positions. The intern's assigned hours and duties vary depending on where the student is assigned.
Upon receipt of an internship request, your request will be forwarded to the Chief of Police for approval. Typically, the student will be asked to meet with the supervisor in the Career Development Unit to discuss the student's internship expectations, work schedule, etc. If a conditional offer is made, the prospective intern must successfully complete a criminal background check before the offer is finalized and the internship can begin.
