Do you take lateral transfers or have a modified academy for certified police officers?

At this time we do not offer a lateral or modified cadet class. If the department decides to have one it will be posted on this web site.

Do I need to submit all my documents before testing?

Yes and No. You must submit certain documents to prove eligibility to take the civil service test, but there are other documents we will give you to complete and return if your score on the test is 70 or above.

 

Can I make copies of originals or certified copies?

No, they must be the original or a certified copy.  However, if you bring the originals to the recruiting office we will make certified copies and return your originals.

How far in advance should I apply for a position?

Applications are only available when a civil service test date is announced. Applications are normally accepted 30-45 days after the announcement is posted.

 

How long does the hiring process generally take?

The process can take up to six months. The eligibility list from which we hire from is good for six months. When we get to your name on the list, the background normally takes 3-4 weeks.

As an out of state applicant how many trips will I need to make to Tyler during the Hiring process?

It depends, but normally three trips. Once for the entrance exam. Second trip for your pre-employment testing and the third trip for your oral interview board.

If I am active duty military are their any waivers for testing?

No waivers are allowed at any time.

 

How many cadets are usually hired?

The number of cadets hired will depend on the number of positions to be filled.

 

How many academy classes are held each year?

The Tyler Police Department does not have its own academy.  All cadets are assigned to attend the Tyler Junior College Law Enforcement Academy.  The number of academies held each year is established by the Tyler Junior College.

Can I apply if I have used marijuana or other drugs/narcotics in the past?

This will depend on the time of the last usage of marijuana or drugs/narcotics. Information regarding a person’s background is handled on a case by case basis.

What will happen if I omit important information or found to be deceptive in the hiring process regarding my background history?

Honesty and integrity are important values found in Tyler Police Officers. If you are found omitting important information or being deceptive you may be disqualified from the hiring process. You must successfully complete a background investigation, which includes submitting to a Polygraph in order to continue in the hiring process.

 

Is it possible to do a ride out with an Tyler Police Officer if I am in the application process?

Yes, Ride outs are required as part of your hiring process. This is scheduled only at the time we get to your name on the eligibility list.

Are there residency requirements to work for the Tyler Police Department?

Tyler Police Officers do not have residency requirements.

Does the police department have a policy on tattoos?

Yes, officers may have tattoos but if they are visible the Chief of Police may require them to be covered up by clothing or arm bands.

Can I apply if I have not received the required 30 hours of college credits at time of application without 3 years military service or 3 years as a police officer?

No, all applicants must have at least 30 hours of college credit from an accepted school at the time of application unless they have 3 years of military service or 3 years as a police officer.

How many sworn officers work for the Tyler Police Department?

At this time we are authorized at full strength of 194 police officers.

When I join the Tyler Police Department do I have to live at the Training Academy?

No, cadets do not live at the academy. The work hours will normally be Monday to Friday from 7:00am to 4:00pm. Cadets will have several training sessions during the academy and will work weekends and evening/nights hours depending upon what lesson plan or project they are assigned to at that time.

How long is the Training Academy?

The academy will last 18 weeks.

 

I have been disqualified or was previously disqualified from the hiring process. How long will it be before I can re-apply?

That will depend on what you were disqualified for. The City of Tyler Civil Service rules dictate the time frame for disqualifiers.

Does the Tyler Police Department hire interns?

No.  Internships are voluntary non-paid positions.  For further information visit our College Intern Program page.

 

When I graduate the academy what happens?

New officers are assigned with a Field Training Officer for 3 to 4 months for one on one training. You will be assigned to a patrol shift and will have the same schedule as the Field Training Officer you are assigned.

I need to withdraw from the hiring process or I can't make my scheduled testing dates. How do I notify the Recruiting unit?

Contact the background Investigator assigned to you.

 

What do I wear for my initial interviews with a recruiter or background investigator?

Applicants should wear the appropriate style of clothing based on the appointment.  The wearing of cut-off shirts, torn or faded clothing, gym attire, flip-flops, sandals and shorts does not show a professional appearance that we look for in our applicants.

I was discharged with a dishonorable discharge from the military. Can I apply?

Local civil service rules require that military service must be characterized as "Honorable".

I was discharged from the military with an general discharge under honorable conditions or uncharacterized. Is this accepted to apply for the Tyler Police Department?

Does the Tyler Police Department offer a study guide for the Civil Service Exam?

No.  The Tyler Police Department does not provide a Study Guide for the Civil Service Exam, however, you can go to the website, http://www.ipma-hr.org/assessment/study/policefull and order a study guide directly from the company we use. They offer two study guides; one study guide will address any of the civil service test the company provides, and the other study guide only addresses the P series test, which is the type test that the Tyler Police Department gives.

Besides my salary can I earn further income?

Yes, many officers increase their salary by pay incentives for specialties they obtain such as Bi-lingual pay, Field Training Officer pay, member of a specialty unit.  Officers also receive educational incentive pay, shift differential pay and military benefits include the G.I. Bill incentives that you make for the first 11 to 12 months if you are eligible.
