College Intern Program

The Tyler Police Department offers internships to those persons currently enrolled in criminal justices courses at a college and possess an interest in the law enforcement profession. The intern assignments are designed to allow students the experience of the daily operations within a law enforcement agency. We have four (4) intern positions to fill; placement of a student is based on the receipt of an application. Every effort will be made to place a student in an intern position; however, placement is not guaranteed. Past interns have been assigned to a variety of units.

The majority of students wanting to intern at Tyler Police Department are interested in pursuing careers in criminal justice and/or law enforcement. Most students who are offered internships work a minimum of 20 hours per week throughout the semester. Internships are considered voluntary, unpaid positions. Assigned hours and duties of the intern are varied, depending on where the student is assigned.

Upon receipt of an internship request, your request will be forwarded to the Chief of Police for approval. Typically, the student will be asked to meet with the supervisor in the Career Development Unit to discuss expectations of the student internship, work schedule, etc. If a conditional offer is made, the prospective intern must successfully complete a criminal background check before the offer is finalized and the internship can begin.

In order to be considered for an internship position, you must meet the following criteria:
1. U.S. Citizenship.
2. Valid driver license
3. Internship applicant must have completed 30 semester hours at an accredited college/university at time of application.
