THE CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY
The Citizen Police Academy concept originated in England in 1977. The first city in the United States to implement the program was Orlando, Florida in 1985. The first Citizen Police Academy in Texas was held in Missouri City, Texas in 1986. There are approximately sixty (60) law enforcement agencies in Texas participating in this program. The Tyler Police Department held their first Citizen Police Academy in the Spring of 1996. On average two sessions per year have been held since that time. To date over 300 citizens have completed this program.
The Tyler Police Department hosts the Citizen Police Academy to enhance the relationship between the police and the community. This forum provides an opportunity for officers and citizens to interact with each other in a positive environment. The citizen will get a first hand explanation of how their police department works as well as the role it plays in the community. The Citizen Police Academy is not designed to make police officers out of citizens, but we hope it will pull back the "blue curtain" and tell you everything you want to know about your department. It is the sincere hope of the Tyler Police Department the Citizen Police Academy will build trust and confidence between our citizens and officers. We look forward to seeing you in a future class.
The Tyler Police Department conducts two Citizen Police Academy sessions a year. Each session meets one night a week for ten weeks. Class starts at 6:30 p.m. and ends at 9:30 p.m. Classes are limited to 30 people.
